With Ganesh Chaturthi round the corner, work is on in full swing to finish idols of the elephant god. The tallest statue of Ganesh in the city has come up at Saheed Nagar. The 30-foot tall idol will be a major attraction on the festival to be observed on Thursday.
"As many as 20 artists from West Bengal have been working to complete the gigantic Ganesh idol. This is the highest idol in the city and will attract people in huge numbers. Another major attraction would be a 15kg laddu in the hands of the lord," said president of Winner Association, a youth club, Jitendra Rao.
Besides the huge idol, the association has organized a seven-day long special cultural programme during the festival. "We have also invited visually challenged and unprivileged children to the puja and arranged special programmes for them," he said. The association will spend a total of Rs 7-8 lakh, said members of the 15-year-old puja committee.
Last year, the club had made a 35-feet high statue of Lord Ganesh, but due to shortage of space this year, they reduced the height. "We faced a problem last year as the height of statue was more than the height of the space available in the pandal. This affected proper visibility of the statue," said Rao.
Like last year, this year too club members plan to 'immerse' the statue by spraying water on it with the help of the fire brigade.
